Snakes Near the Old Beaver Dam

I went paddling to the head of the lake a few weeks ago and noticed that the flow from the 'new' river outlet was much stronger and colder than usual. We kayaked up the river as far as we could and saw that the beaver dam was all broken up. Then we paddled up the 'old' river outlet and found the water was completely still.  And when we turned around I saw the biggest water snake I have ever seen on Lake Chocorua. I want to go back up there this summer and get out of my boat and walk around to see what happened to the beavers. They're gone.
