Through the seasons, the lake basin is a place to return to—to swim or kayak across the lake, to drop a fishing line off the bridge or through the ice, to experience the sled dog races, or to wander through the trails listening to birds calling high in the trees and noticing the tiny wildflowers and colorful mushrooms that pop up through the forest floor.

TAX BREAK ALERT

Did you know that if you are at least 70½ years old or older and taking a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from an IRA you can direct some (or all) of that RMD directly to Chocorua Lake Conservancy as a Qualified Charitable Donation (QCD)? This makes giving easy and can help to lessen your tax liability.

What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)?

Anyone 70½ years old or older can donate to a nonprofit directly and tax-free from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) instead of taking their required minimum distribution (RMD). A QCD allows you to maximize your charitable impact by donating the full RMD amount tax-free to a charity. Contact your IRA administrator or financial advisor and instruct them to transfer funds to Chocorua Lake Conservancy and any other charity you designate.

How will my donation be spent?

Chocorua Lake Conservancy receives no town or state funding. CLC depends upon donations from its members, friends and visitors to fund most annual expenses, including:

  • New plantings and annual maintenance projects to preserve the natural beauty of all public access areas, reduce erosion, and prevent nutrient and sediment runoff into the lake.

  • A twice-daily litter patrol to keep the Grove, Island and other CLC-owned public access areas free of trash from Memorial Day through late October.

  • Regular samplings of lake water quality.

  • Toilets in the Grove, Island, and Tamworth Residents Beach areas for thousands of visitors from Memorial Day to late October.

  • Maintenance and periodic replacement of the historic wooden railings on the Narrows Bridge.

  • Maintenance and repairs of the dam at the outlet from the Little Lake to the Chocorua River.

  • Maintenance of 800 acres of conservation land around Chocorua Lake owned or managed by CLC.

  • Monitoring and protection of 2,500 additional acres in the Chocorua Lake Basin through covenants and easements held by CLC.

  • Co-management with the US Forest Service of trails on Mount Chocorua and Mount Paugus.
