Land conservation and stewardship, free public access to Chocorua Lake for all visitors, trails on beautiful conservation lands, a presentation on creating resilient backyard habitat in a changing climate—and a chance to visit with CLC staff and board members old and new, and friends and neighbors who share a love of the Chocorua Lake Basin.
On Saturday, August 19 from 4-6PM, join Chocorua Lake Conservancy at Tin Mountain Conservation Center in Albany, NH, for our Annual Meeting and Social Hour. Learn about the recent work of CLC, hear from our Executive Director, Alex Moot, have a chance to talk to the Board of Directors, vote for a slate of board nominees, and find out about volunteer opportunities and more.
The meeting will include a presentation by CLC Stewardship Director Debra Marnich on “Backyard Habitat in a Changing Climate.” New England is experiencing longer periods of drought, creating stress for both plants and animals, and also more heavy rain events, a combination that increases risks of flooding and erosion. As average air temperatures rise, species adapted to warmer climates move northward, with both pleasant and concerning effects. Every landscape is vulnerable to climate change—even the landscape in your own backyard. Deb will discuss small but mighty habitat improvements you can make on your land to help flora and fauna withstand a changing climate, including promoting plant species that are specifically adapted to challenging dry conditions; soil health; climate adaptation techniques for gardening such as hugelkultur, water gardens, water collection devices, mulching, and the addition of organic materials; and ways to encourage the natural predators that a whole food web and functioning ecosystem require. We can journey with Mother Nature to create and maintain holistic ecosystems and diverse, resilient habitats that can better withstand climate change, invasive pest infestations, drought, and flood.
Please register in advance below so that we know how many people to expect. Refreshments will be available during the social hour that follows the annual meeting.
