As we stack wood and chink gaps between wall and window, the flora and fauna around us are also preparing for the winter to come.
On Saturday, November 9, from 9-11:30AM, join Chocorua Lake Conservancy Stewardship Director Lynne Flaccus for a morning hike along the trails of the Scott and Bolles Reserve, enjoying the fall weather, exercise, and camaraderie! Fall is a wonderful time to explore fields and forests around the lake. Plants and animals are preparing for the snow and cold to come, or have already become dormant. Along the hike we’ll keep our eyes and ears open for the critters that are still active and learn about strategies they may use for surviving the winter.
We’ll leave from the Hammond Trail parking area at the end of Scott Road, take the Heron Pond trail to Heron Pond/Lonely Lake and on to the shore of Lake Chocorua. The trails are moderate, passing through mixed forests, along eskers, and along wetlands near the shore.
Be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes, dress in layers for the weather, pack water and a snack. The hike is about 2.5 miles round trip from the parking area to the lake and back. Though we love dogs, please leave your four-legged friends home for this hike.
Meet at the Hammond Trail parking lot at the end of the Scott Road, north of the lake.
